Who do you think Obama should choose for a VP? Clinton? Webb? Wes Clark? Let's hear your theories.

  • Jimmy Carter (of Georgia) recommended Sam Nunn (of Georgia), who I think is an interesting candidate.  He has great foreign policy credentials, and is a white guy from a southern state.
  • Clinton  (of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Arkansas, New York, and Washington): I dunno.  What will she bring to the ticket that somebody else won't?  No offense, but where else will women go, but to Obama.  McCain and the GOP's record on abortion rights -- and other women-oriented issues -- is abysmal.  As for Clinton's newly-found shot-and-a-brew blue-collar drinking buddies?  I find it hard to imagine Clinton will really bring them in for Obama.  Obama would have better luck with a working-class white guy and union endorsements.  Then there's also Bill to contend with.  Sigh.  On the third hand, maybe the Clintons could put Arkansas and/or Florida back in play for the Democrats.
  • Webb (of Virginia)?  Can Webb deliver Virginia for the Dems?  Is that enough of a deliverance to make a difference?  If we go that route of thinking, then Ted Strickland (of must-win Ohio) might be a better choice.
  • Sibelius (of Kansas): Will women see her as an acceptable pseudo-Clinton?  Will she put Kansas into play?
  • Wes Clark?  I like the military-credentials angle.  But I think Iraq has already made up the minds of voters who are making their choice based on military issues.

In summary, I don't see anybody who will look like a brilliant choice.  Maybe Caroline Kennedy?  She's on the Veep Vetting Committee.  Didn't Cheney head Bush's Veep Vetting Committee?

Caroline Kennedy? Sounds great, there's just one problem: She's never held any elected office. The American people do tend to draw a line in the sand when it comes to things like that.

One word: Change.

Besides, there are plenty of first-timers in politics, from Al Franken to Arn Schwarzenegger.
And... and... and.. she's a Kennedy!
And..... I think she's a Woman!

Come to think of it, why IS Caroline Kennedy on Obama's VP search committee?  What does she bring to the process?  Does she implicitly speak for the Kennedy clan?

I think she's essentially standing in for Ted.
