Author Topic: New Debt On Site Finally Finished  (Read 6377 times)
on: March 22, 2007, 03:25:09 PM

The other day I finally put the finishing touches on the new Debt On web site.  There is now commentary on every strip in the archive, a comment system for replying to strips, new character dossiers, and lots of pretty new graphics.

...and it looks good, Scott! I like the black and white. How did the transition to Wordpress go for you?

Not too bad, if a little time consuming.  The hardest part was probably altering the comicpress layout to look like the one I'd already come up with.  I also had to manually create a blog post for every strip in the archive to convert to comicpress, but that part was kind of fun.  Now its like the old strips have special DVD commentary. I went through and did posts for some of them, but I decided it wasn't worth it for 340+ strips, so I wrote a little import program in PHP which automatically imported all my strips and added a "This is a placeholder" post to each one.

Man... I would have gotten the site done so much sooner if I'd done that.

(Or not.  I'm not much for programming so learning enough PHP to write the script probably would have taken me longer than manually adding the strips..)

I recommend learning some PHP. It's so useful in administering a site. It's easy, too. I learned it in a weekend, had my original comic script a week later.

Yeah?  I'm always plodding my way through other people's scripts trying to figure out what I need to alter.  How would you recommend learning?  Just get a book and work my way through it?

Other people's scripts are the way to start, and get a book for reference. I recommend Programming PHP by Rasmus Lerdorff, from O'Reilly.  I've found it invaluable.
